About Cranbrook
Welcome to Cranbrook Educational Community, one of the world’s leading centers of education, science, and art. Cranbrook was founded in 1904 by Detroit philanthropists George and Ellen Scripps Booth. In 1989, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.
Today, Cranbrook Educational Community is comprised of Cranbrook Academy of Art, Cranbrook Art Museum, Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research, Cranbrook House & Gardens, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Cranbrook Schools, and Horizons-Upward Bound.
The 319-acre campus features the work of world-renowned architects, sculptors, and others, waiting for you to explore. Highlights include:
- A natural history museum with dinosaurs, a planetarium, and an observatory.
- One of the first contemporary art museums in the US.
- Architecturally significant historic homes such as the Albert Kahn-designed Cranbrook House, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Smith House, and Saarinen House, which was designed by Eliel Saarinen and includes works by Loja Saarinen, Eero Saarinen, and Pipsan Saarinen Swanson; and buildings by Steven Holl, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Rafael Moneo, and Peter Rose.
- Outdoor sculptures by artists like Carl Milles and Marshall Fredericks.
- Natural and tended landscapes, including one of the oldest Japanese gardens in the US, with fountains, lakes, trails, and more.
Cranbrook is also home to more than 1,600 students in grades pre-K through 12 attending the independent college preparatory schools, and over 130 students in the graduate art program.
